1. This week I did a shoot in Manchester with Samio @ Nemesis Models. I’ve been a fan of Sam’s look since I first came across her shots about 2 years ago, and I’m glad I finally got around to shooting with her. Makeup taken care of by the terrific Becky Zijciw. All shot on location in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

  2. After a little tidy up and rummage around the ‘office’ this afternoon, I dug out this book of Nadav Kander’s. I love discovering new photographers and seeing their work. In fact, I probably stumble across a new photographer on a near-weekly basis who’s photographs really spark my senses. Kander is the one of the few photographers who I like to refer back to over and over again and never tire of their work. I remember when I was studying my degree and discovered one of his portraits for the first time (Brad Pitt for Rolling Stone magazine), inspiring then, inspiring now. Wonderful stuff.

  3. Well, It’s been a while, and I’ve certainly been neglecting my camera outside of a studio environment as of late. My friends Ben, Sean and I braved the brutal northern climate over the weekend and paid a visit to Cuerden Valley woodland park. Fingers-falling-off and frozen-faces galore!

  4. Earlier this month I shot Irish actor Andrew Simpson for Fiasco Magazine. I hadn’t heard of Andrew prior to the shoot, but it turns out he had a pretty major/leading role in ‘Notes on a Scandal’ starring alongside Judi Dench, along with a host of theatre and TV spots over the years. Here’s the published feature along with a few other selects from the edit.

Lovely guy, with a great accent. Shot on location in Soho, London. Styling by Krishan Parmar.

  5. October-ish? I’m not sure, I’ve lost track…

Is is that time again already?  Ah yes, the clocks have turned back, everything is getting cold, dark and miserable and it’s that time of year where the people of London layer up to brave the brutal British climate, only to sweat profusely on an overcrowded tube… Delightful.

The last month or so has been pretty interesting, but the main flavour has definitely been celebrity editorial, so I’m going to focus on that.

A few great shoots with Jay Brooks of Shoot Group this month, including 3 cover shoots featuring Nigella Lawson, Bradley Wiggins and Rafe Spall/Sally Hawkins for the Guardian Weekend and Times Culture magazines respectively:

Jay and myself were fortunate enough to have the privilege of shooting the lovely (and very welcoming) Nigella inside her actual house, a stunning 3 storey property in the heart of Chelsea. Fortunately for us, the house was unfathomably enormous, which meant that rigging up two lighting setups and a 3m Colorama was a breeze.

Next up was Bradley Wiggins, shooting again for Guardian Weekend:

We shot Bradley at an old social club near Angel on a bit of a hectic day, Bradley was doing three shoots that day all in the same location for Fred Perry, Guardian Weekend (Jay, myself and another assistant, Tom) and a GQ feature. All the photography teams were working to tight time frames but it was all good fun and great to meet a national hero who heralds from my home county of Lancashire.

Moving along, another cover shoot, this time for Times Culture magazine with Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins for an article about their upcoming play ‘Constellations’:

We shot the Constellations stars (no pun intended) in the attic/rehearsal room of the Old Vic theatre in Waterloo, a beautiful building with unforgiving staircases. Definitely not Colorama friendly. There were some interesting/dangerous antics involving a rickety ladder, a black out curtain and a couple of magic clamps, but all worthwhile and necessary of course…

Let’s see now, where was I…? Ah yes, a nice and straightforward shoot with the almighty Elliott Morgan, shooting some Little Mix press shots for their label at Holborn Studios:

As we were shooting Little Mix, One Direction were also doing a shoot in one of the other studios at Holborn. Seeing Zayne Malik walk into our set bearing a young child in his arms and a couple of guest appearances from Harry Styles made for some interesting viewing…

Always a pleasure to work with Elliott, who is also the Picture Editor for Fiasco magazine, which would probably pave way to a convenient time to mention that I shot Irish actor Andrew Simpson for Fiasco this month. No pictures to show just yet as the issue doesn’t get released til the end of November, make sure to keep your eyes peeled on here to see the shots when they’re published…

I also finally managed to track down some shots on Getty of James Nesbitt that I worked with Dan Burn-Forti on for the Telegraph magazine a few weeks back, apologies for the watermarks…

On a personal note, I picked up this nice little guide book last week from a great little bike-obsessed coffee shop on Old Street called “Look Mum, No Hands!”. The book serves as a guide to some of the best speciality coffee shops across London (Look Mum, No Hands is one of many coffee shops listed inside). One by one I’m attempting to grab a brew at as many of them as I can, without causing myself a ravaging caffeine overdose in the process:

That just about wraps up this month’s update. I have some interesting stuff coming up in the next couple of weeks, both shooting and assisting so be sure to check back soon!

  6. The last few weeks…

Quick update! Sadly I haven’t had much to blog about recently, it’s not that I haven’t been busy, on the contrary in fact, almost all the shoots i’ve worked on lately have required me to sign secrecy clauses until the images are released, therefore I haven’t been able to post any behind the scenes stuff or give too many details away of what I’ve been working on…

    HOWEVER…

The last 6 weeks have seen me working on pretty much everything you can bloody well think of, from a Gin distillery in Hereford, to a (HUGE) national Whisky campaign, portrait sessions with actors of international acclaim, video projects for London Fashion week right through to shooting a 15 piece female Belgian choir!

Here’s the month in pictures, or at least what I can get away with showing for now.

Caught the last few moments of Olympic pride…

Dressed up Benga (Dubstep producer) like a stylish Spaceman on location in Battersea…

    Bought a new bike…

Shot some interesting fashion editorial at a very fancy hotel in South Kensington…

    Worked on some lighting diagrams…

I also recently purchased a Lumix GX1. I’ve been in the market for a while for a micro 4/3 system that I can carry about and use on the fly (the ol’ 5D MKII is hardly an inconspicuous bit of kit to carry around at all times…). I haven’t had much chance to test it out as of yet, but here’s a quick snap of fellow photo assistant Dan Ross and myself mildly intoxicated out in Soho…

That wraps up September for now, I shall be posting final publicised shots of the shoots I’ve worked on as and when they are released so keep your eyes peeled, October looks set to be a good one already with more advertising work and celeb editorial in the diary, onwards and upwards!

  7. The big move… August 2012.

Well, it’s been a while… Seeing as I’ve barely even used this blog for anything productive, I made a promise to myself that I would make it more active after I’d graduated uni and started getting stuff done!

Anyway, after (not) much deliberation, I decided to pack up all my possessions almost immediately after graduating, and left the lovely grey city of Preston behind to start the next chapter of my life in London.

Early days yet, but here’s what I’ve been up to since moving in:

Assisted Jon Attenborough around some of the city’s tourist hot spots…

Discovered some, erm… Interesting literature lying around at my flat…

Had a wander around the 7 More Riverside Development to shoot some more stuff for my ongoing City Geometrics work… (Also managed to catch Mo Farrah winning his 2nd Gold for GB on the big screen at Potter’s Field Park in the process, incredible moment).

On a side note, as I was post processing these I had a chance to get some real use out of the VSCO software for the first time since I bought it. Really nice bit of software, quick, easy, very effective and with nice results. If you haven’t heard of VSCO Film, you can check it out here.

It’s early days for me at the moment, but the first week down here has been pretty good. Few meetings arranged with some photographers that I really admire coming up next week so fingers crossed!

  8. Not your average business card…

In conjunction with my recent website overhaul and rebranding phase, I decided it was time for some new business cards to round off the new look. This morning I woke up to a nice little package from the people at Moo.com…

Maybe I’ve seen the infamous ‘business card’ scene from American Psycho too many times, but I’ve always been a sucker for great design products with all the bells and whistles, and these certainly fit the bill!

Let’s just hope I don’t hand one to a potential client who decides to murder me with an axe out of professional jealousy, a la Paul Allen/Patrick Bateman… But enough with the American Psycho references.

These cards are a shining example of Moo’s latest creation, the ‘Luxe’ business card. Moo claims it to be the “finest business card on the web”, and after opening mine up this morning, I’d have to agree with them!

Arriving in a beautiful bespoke presentation box and weighing in at 600gsm (twice as thick as most premium business cards), the Luxe card uses four layers of award winning Mohawk Superfine paper, a sharp white back and front with a double layer of either red, blue or black running through the middle to create a really eyecatching sandwich of colour. I decided to opt for the red core (above), as it ever so conveniently matched the rest of my design colour scheme.

Head on over to Moo with the following link and you can get 10% off your first order, courtesy of myself and Moo.com!

  9. “View” Graduate Exhibition

After what feels like an eternity of planning, production and finishing, my final graduate exhibition pieces are now completed and hung at university, marking the end of my degree and career in education.

Printed by the good folk at The Print Space and retouched by the wonderful Emma Jacob from Happy Finish, the project entitled “There is No Business to be Done on a Dead Planet” will be displayed as part of the annual UCLan graduate arts fair.

The exhibition showcases the best work of UCLan’s graduating year of Photography students, opening to the public on Friday 15th June at 5pm at the university’s Victoria Building and The Media Factory.
